Safety Surfacing
One of the most important things that you can do when designing your playground is to provide safety surfacing. While proper safety surfacing will not prevent all injuries it will greatly reduce the likelihood of life-threatening head injuries. Even if you do not purchase the surfacing material from us, please provide it for the protection of your children.
USA Play is a provider of the most widely used and we feel most effective safety surfacing options. Choices range from:
- Artificial Turf
- Bonded Rubber Mulch
- Rubber Mulch

Artificial turf
A playground should be a safe place for your children to run and play, however sooner or later your kids are going to end up on the ground or taking a fall when they’re playing. Artificial turf offers the perfect solution for playground surfacing. Whether you are a day care facility, community play area, public park, or private playground area, we have been testing our products for years to ensure that we produce only the best artificial turf surface for these applications. We have systems available that can meet any desired fall height rating up to 12 feet!
Artificial turf is softer and safer than gravel, dirt, wood mulch or natural grass and is practically maintenance-free. You can feel confident that your children will have a safe play surface when you choose artificial turf to cover your playground.
Our advanced primary backing allows maximum drainage and is environmentally friendly. Combine this with our premium fibers and industry leading turf technology and you get the absolute best surface on the playground market today.

Bonded Rubber Mulch
Bonded Rubber Mulch safety surfacing offers a unique and natural trail or path system and playground safety surface. Bonded Rubber Mulch surfacing is a one step pour that provides a cost-effective, long-lasting, safe, and durable option for any playground or park setting. It is also a spectacular choice for areas such as zoos, and horse walking/training facilities.
Its versatility also allows it to be combined with inlays of the EPDM product for extending the design possibilities. Bonded Rubber Mulch characteristics allow for piling and sloping. This helps create a natural ground setting that will fool any passer by until they actually approach the area, feeling its anti-fatigue qualities in each step.
Our Bonded Rubber mulch meets and exceeds shock absorbing properties in accordance with the procedures outlined in ASTM F-1292-96 and ASTM F-1951-99, and standard specifications for Impact Attenuation of Surface Systems under and around playground equipment.

Rubber Mulch
One of the safest playground loose fill surfaces is rubber mulch. The truth of the matter is that the rubber playground mulch is made of recycled tires. The important difference is that the playground mulch has 99.9% of the metal removed while standard rubber mulch does not.
It is a great option for a number of reasons. It can be very attractive because it comes in a variety of colors such as blue, green, rust, brown and others. The least expensive option is the uncolored or black which has not been colored. The coloring has a warranty of ten years.
Another advantage is that the product does not breakdown and will be available to protect the child for up to 10 years. Many people ask about the safety of the rubber mulch versus the engineered wood fiber. That question was addressed by the EPA: “Playground surfaces can contain recovered rubber and PVC materials that are often more desirable than wood chips, sand, or asphalt, because they can provide more cushioning and thereby may be safer for children.” — Source EPA.gov.

Engineered wood fiber
Engineered wood fiber is an economical playground surfacing used on nearly 3/4 of all playgrounds in the U.S. because of its high impact absorbing qualities & firm, slip resistant surface. If properly installed it allows for wheelchairs and strollers to traverse across it. Less expensive products such as sand and pea gravel just aren’t accessible.
It is important to understand that there is a very big difference between engineered wood fiber (EWF) and landscape mulch. The International Playground Equipment Manufacturers Assoc (IPEMA) certifies EWF for impact attenuation (ASTM F1292), to be free of nails, staples and hazardous metals such as Lead, Mercury and Arsenic, and to be ground properly so that the product will knit together to meet federal accessibility laws (F2075 test method for EWF.)

Unitary Rubber Surfacing
combined with engineered wood fiber.
USA Play is now offering the best of both worlds. The lower cost of the engineered wood fiber with the stability, low maintenance and ADA accessability of poured in place surfacing. Installation of the USA Play Rubber Surfacing on top of the engineered wood fiber provides greater fall protection of 12′ at about a third of the price of poured in place surfacing. It meets ASTM 1591 ADA guidelines and ASTM 1292 guidelines for playground surfacing impact attenuation.
This solution reduces playground maintenance in high traffic areas and is easy to install, expand or repair if needed. We also provide professional installation if needed.
If you are looking to provide true ADA access on your playgrounds but don’t have the budget for poured in place surfacing then this is your best option.
